Maryse Goudreau

Over the past twelve years, Maryse Goudreau has dedicated a body of work to the beluga whale. Committed to following the species in its slow decline, the Gaspesian artist has created a series of photographic, sound, literary and sculptural works that cast an empathetic eye on this sentinel of climate change in the North.

In an exhibition dedicated to young audiences, she revisits this corpus with the eyes of a child, creating immersive works where birth and extinction coexist, drawing on her lifelong love of the animal to feel her way through a mixture of hope and mourning.

In the Eye of the Beluga features installations that involve listening, touching and playing to reconnect visitors with the animistic ways of relating we experience in childhood. Maryse’s ecofeminist approach highlights the importance of inter-species connection, presents the concept of motherhood as an antidote to the destruction of the land and the beings that inhabit it, and calls on us to develop a sense of care for all living things that goes beyond the human.

Guiding us deep into the world of marine mammals so that we may grasp the full meaning of their imminent extinction, she invites us to see the world through the eye of the beluga.

This exhibit is presented in partnership with Galerie Foreman, the Musée Le Chafaud, the Vaste et Vague artist center, and Rencontres with support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
